Mammals

Lyrics by Mario Spagnesi
Drawings by Umberto Catalano

No mammals present in our country can be defined as water in the full sense, but some species live a life water-seller, that spend most of their lives in water, which is a key component, if not primary, their living environment. Among the latter, it seems that few have adapted to brackish waters. More numerous are the mammals that frequent the margins of wetlands or areas that emerged within them, but that is not related to aquatic ecosystems.

Species reported regularly or occasionally in Cannevié’s Valley;

Water vole (Arvicola amphibius)
Weasel (Mustela nivalis)
Nutria (Myocastor coypus)
Black rat (Rattus rattus)
Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus)
Brown rat (Rattus norvegicus)
European mole (Talpa europea)
Badger (Meles meles)
Fox (Vulpes vulpes)

Fishes

Lyrics by Mario Spagnesi
Drawings by Titti di Rousi

The fish fauna of Cannevié Valley is typical of brackish lagoons, and variable salinity environments where extreme temperature changes represent the most significant limiting factors. Few species are able to survive in these special situations, but for the lack of interspecific competition result in populations with a high number of individuals.

Species reported in Cannevié’s Valley;

Eel (Anguilla anguilla)
Sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)
Mullet (Mugil cephalus)
Smelt (Atherina boyeri)
Musino mullet (Liza saliens)
Nono (Aphanius fasciatus)

Reptiles

Lyrics by Mario Spagnesi
Pictures of Marco Andreani

Are few, the species of reptiles that live permanently linked to the aquatic environment. Those in Italy are dulciacquicole moreover, that environmental conditions in the wetlands of brackish water are their unfavorable. For this reason, in Valle Cannevié the herpetological fauna is represented by a few species.

;Species reported in Cannevié’s Valley

Snake (Coluber viridiflavus)
Grass snake (Natrix natrix)
Lizard (Podarcis siculus)
Green lizard (Lacerta viridis)

Birds

Of fashionable world of swamps and lagoons, animated by complex animal communities, ranging from simple microscopic organisms to mammals, birds that most affect the naturalist for the high concentration of species and especially for the many shapes, colors, evolutionary adaptations that allow them to occupy the most diverse ecological niches offered by wetlands.

Valley Cannevié is of considerable interest for birds and as a temporary place of rest and feed during the flight of spring and autumn migration, both as a staging area for the winter, and finally as a nesting area.
